Birthplace of T.S. Eliot and Chuck Berry, St. Louis boasts a unique mix of vague European sophistication with all-American blue collar sensibility, a cosmopolitan oasis in the middle of the Great Plains.
?
Getting around is a breeze, as the public transportation system connects to just about every point of interest in the city.? The MetroLink rail network and local buses run continuously throughout the day and well into the night; day passes can be purchased for both for around €3 and change.? Rides are free between Union Station and Laclede’s Landing on weekdays during the lunch hour, 11:30am to 1:30pm.
?
One of St. Louis’ most famous landmarks is the massive Anheuser-Busch Brewery.? A maze of several impeccable—and often indistinguishable—red brick buildings, the working brewery and bottling plant is certainly a bit of a tourist trap, but still pretty brilliant.? The guided tours are top-notch, the guides are friendly and knowledgeable, and you can’t beat the generous free samples and snacks at the end of the tour.? The legal drinking age in the US is 21; be sure to have proper identification.? The other St. Louis hallmark is the imposing Gateway Arch.? Visitors can enter the Arch and take a four minute tram ride to the top, where the panoramic views are breathtaking.? Long lines are inevitable, especially in the summer months, but check out the free Museum of Western Expansion located under the Arch while you wait.? The St. Louis Art Museum has an impressive collection of worldwide art spanning nearly every country, style and historical period.? At the popular Grant’s Farm, families can enjoy a kind of suburban safari that features over a thousand different animals from all over the world.? A tram takes visitors through the open park where the animals wander freely.? Another family-friendly attraction is the City Museum, made mostly from recycled or re-imagined industrial materials.? Kids will love to explore the space and will also enjoy the adjacent World Aquarium.
?
For travel adventure foodies, St. Louis offers everything from Thai to Persian, Afghan to Italian.? Be sure to try frozen custard, a super creamy cousin of ice cream and a local tradition.? Leave room for a decadent chocolate dessert and a specialty cocktail at Bailey’s Chocolate Bar, where gourmet cheese plates and designer pizzas help visitors feel a little less guilty about their indulgence.
?
St. Louis has a jumping live music scene with several neighbourhoods in on the action.? Rock, hip-hop and alt-rock fans should head over to the Loop in University City, the area surrounding St. Louis University, to mingle with the student set.? A more upscale, sophisticated crowd frequents the bars and clubs in the city’s Central West End.? Soulard is a laid-back, unpretentious district with great live jazz and blues.? Most of the club scene is concentrated in Laclede’s Landing, an area of restored factories and warehouses.? There are also several riverboat casinos moored in the Mississippi—deliciously tacky, but oddly charming.? Legal gambling age is also 21 and most riverboat casinos require both proper ID and a nominal admission fee. ... |
