British farmers allowed to export meat again
Hello! I'm Kristin Volk on this Thursday, August 23, 2007 with a UPI Headline Update. British farmers will be able to export meat and live animals again after the European Union recently lifted a ban on those exports. An outbreak of foot and mouth disease there prompted the ban. The European Commission backed London's request for a lifting because there had been no new cases since August 7. Restrictions will be limited to farms in a 6-mile zone around the source of the outbreak southwest of London. Heavy storms across the Midwest have claimed the lives of at least 25 people. Flooding is responsible for most of those deaths. Roads are washed out, governors have declared states of emergency, and thousands of homes are destroyed. In Wisconsin, closed roads are preventing rescuers from delivering water and other supplies to the hardest-hit areas. Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio has declared emergencies in nine counties. Once a category 5 hurricane, Dean is now a tropical depression and dissipating over central Mexico with a rainy finale. But the storm continued to be threatening as it diminished. Heavy rain could cause life-threatening flashfloods and mudslides in areas of southern and central Mexico. People in those parts could see as much as 20 inches of rain. Dean is responsible for at least nine deaths in the Caribbean. Sudanese refugees in Israel are demonstrating against their possible deportation to Egypt. Israel is closing its borders to refugees who have been streaming in from war-torn Sudan via Egypt. Those affected protested outside of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's residence in Jerusalem. The country has already deported 50 Sudanese, but says it would allow 500 who are in the country now to remain. That's all for now.
